Food Law

My family and friends like it, I can now start selling to the public right?

Wrong!!

As soon as you start producing your product as a business whether profit making or not you must get your food preparation premises (regardless of whether it is your kitchen or rented unit) approved by your local Environmental Health Authority. Did you know that to protect the consumer there is law in place governing where product can be made, how it should be stored, how it should be labelled, what ingredients can be used and at what level? The tip of the iceberg in food law are the Acts – Food Safety, Consumer Protection, Trade Description, Weights & Measures Acts are the key ones that govern food production. Under this comes the Regulations which go into more detail about what is required and include things like Hygiene, Pest Control and Labelling to name a very few.

Your establishment must be approved by your local Environmental Health Officer (EHO) at least 28 days before you start supplying.

The problem most businesses face with Food Law.
If you do not get your establishment approved you could face fines, court appearances and even jail! If you do not do your homework into what is required of you, your business and premises before you invite the EHO to approve you, you could end up with an unapproved facility and major delays in being able to supply. This could lead to losing potential clients but most importantly lack of trust fro your EHO, which means that they could be tougher on you when it comes to subsequent visits.
